The Client's needs
Gymnastics training requires expansive areas with high ceilings and clear spaces. The increasing rental costs have forced many gymnastics clubs to relocate. Amidst these challenges, Croft Structural + Civil has taken great pleasure in helping Croydon develop their new facility in Caterham, Surrey.
Designing for height
The club secured the use of a former supermarket on Caterham High Street. Although the space was large, the club required even more space and higher ceilings. The columns running down the middle of the building needed to be removed. Croft Structural + Civil conducted a survey of the building and chose an innovative method to utilise the existing steelwork of the first floor and roof to create a truss spanning down the middle of the building. The existing connections were reinforced to accommodate the new axial tension and compression loads being transferred along the top and bottom chords of the truss.
A space fit for GB Champions
The removal of the columns has created a spacious area for the club's training activities. Special recognition is due to William Flint from the club, who has driven the project forward and, with his construction expertise kept the project within budget. The addition of foam pits for specialised training distinguishes the club as one of the leading gyms in the southeast of England. Keep an eye on the club for future GB champions!
